About Us

ABOUT US

THE PAST is the creation of Nadia Durrani, Neil Faulkner, and Gary Rossin.

Nadia and Neil are the editors and writers, while Gary is the magazine designer and website man.

All three are trained archaeologists and seasoned magazine people. But with publishing moving increasingly towards digital, they realised the time was right to create a new, exclusively online, archaeology magazine. And so THE PAST was born.

Nadia and Neil both cut their teeth at Cambridge University and then took PhDs at London’s Institute of Archaeology (UCL). But they met in the 2000s when they were the long-standing editors of Current Archaeology and Current World Archaeology (highly recommended print magazines, by the way).

Between them, the three have written over 20 books, including Bigger Than History (Nadia), Lawrence of Arabia’s War (Neil) and Sedgeford Aerodrome (Gary).

Neil is also the director of major field projects in Britain, Jordan, and Italy, and he and Gary have worked closely in the field, most recently pioneering the archaeology of cinema. Meanwhile, Nadia and Neil both lecture widely and have worked on numerous archaeology programmes for Channel 4, the BBC, and others — with Neil in front of the camera, and Nadia behind it.

So that is us. Three specialists who are bringing top-rate archaeological journalism into the present. The result is THE PAST, a digital magazine for everyone interested in the dynamic discipline that is world archaeology.
